Analysis of potential CO2 capture in areas of Minera Los Pelambres

Project Leader:

Rodrigo Moya, Environmental Manager.

Desafío:

Antofagasta Minerals is committed to a greenhouse gas emission reduction target of 5%, equivalent to 586,333 ton CO2, for the five-year period 2018-2022. This goal will be achieved through the following activities of the Energy Efficiency Plan:

• Liquefied natural gas + repowering solution plant treatment (55% savings equivalent to 79,944 ton CO2).

• CEN photovoltaic plant (20MW @FP25%, saving 51,903 ton CO2) and MLP (9MW @FP25%, saving 16.182 ton CO2).

• CAEX device (5% saving, 11,305 ton CO2).

• The remaining difference (327,000 tons CO2) must come from forest protection/enrichment.

Solution:

It is proposed to validate the natural capture carried out by the green areas owned by Los Pelambres, as a contribution to the goal of reducing CO2 emissions and evaluating alternatives in areas outside these properties, generating a business case that allows defining a CO2 reduction strategy through the incorporation of green areas.

Objetivos:

Evaluate potential CO2 capture in existing forest restoration, reforestation, vegetation recovery, along with developing a methodology for AMSA to estimate the power of CO2 capture by this means.
